About Us

Women In Business for Merseyside evolves all the time to reflect the members view and what is relevant in the world of business today.

Three Directors form the board. Ellen Kerr, Elaine Owen and Jan McDermott. Elaine and Jan are sucessful entrepreneurs in their own right. Both based on the Wirral, they understand the complexities of running and operating a small business.

Ellen Kerr co-ordinates the Women In Business for Merseyside network and has been associated with it from the beginning.  She has been instrumental in getting the new Women In Business for Merseyside project off the ground and is assisted in the day to day running of the network by a group of Women In Business for Merseyside members.  They give their spare time organising relevant business events and keeping members up to date with issues that effect women who are in business.

Ellen's personal involvement with the network is in addition to her role as Enterprise Relationship Broker in the Enterprise Development Team at Business Link Northwest. This puts her in the unique position of being able to offer sound business advice to members and access to Business Link services and funding.  It includes information on the following:

Business Start up advice & funding, Workforce Development & Training, Investors In People, General Business Management, New Product Development, Finance, Human Resource, IT Assistance, Sales & Marketing Operations and Diagnostic via consultants with up to 40% subsidy toward total project costs.

Women In Business is a member of PROWESS which is the UK-wide trade association for the promotion of women's enterprise support. The vision is to create an environment where equal numbers of women and men are starting and growing businesses.

They aim to achieve this by promoting and raising awareness of women's enterprise and the organisations that support this key area of economic growth, lobbying on their behalf to create a policy environment and opportunities which support the development of women. This will enable the Network to keep up to date with legislation and have a voice to influence issues that effect women's enterprise.

Women In Business services include :

"Merseyside Woman of the Year"

In May 2003 Ellen won overall "Merseyside Woman of the Year" at the ceremony which took place at The Crowne Plaza, Liverpool. She also walked away with the Business & Commerce award which was one of the categories. The completion was fierce with many leading Merseyside women being nominated for different twelve categories. It was a popular event with 400 attendees and this event is the first of its kind on Merseyside which was sponsored by Daily Post and BT. It is hoped that this will now continue and be one of the highlights in the Diary for raising the profile of women's contribution to Merseyside especially now that Liverpool has won the Bid to be the Capital of Culture for 2008.

Ellen was nominated for the work she has done to ensure the survival of the Network by keeping the Women In Business for Merseyside going. This commitment has been recognised by winning both prestigious awards and it has been a fantastic personal achievement for Ellen but also a terrific boost for the Women In
Business Network which is going from strength to strength.
